1. Building and Structural Maintenance
Property owners must ensure that buildings and structures are:
- Structurally sound
- Weatherproof and secure
- Free from unsafe conditions
- Maintained in good repair
Vacant buildings must also be secured and kept in good condition to prevent deterioration or unauthorized entry.
2. Yard and Exterior Maintenance
Residents are responsible for keeping their yards clean and orderly. This includes:
- Removing garbage, debris, and abandoned items
- Keeping grass and weeds to a reasonable height
- Ensuring vegetation does not obstruct sidewalks, driveways, or roadways
- Preventing overgrowth that creates safety or visibility issues
- Avoiding the accumulation of junk, scrap, or derelict materials
Outdoor storage should be neat, organized, and not create hazards or visual blight.
3. Responsibilities for Landlords and Tenants
Landlords must ensure rental units meet all minimum standards and remain safe and habitable. Tenants are responsible for general cleanliness and reporting maintenance issues to their landlord.
Both parties share responsibility for maintaining a safe living environment.
4. Inspections and Enforcement
The Township may inspect a property when a concern is reported. If a violation is found, the owner may receive a Property Standards Order requiring repairs or cleanup.
If the owner does not comply:
- The Township may complete the work
- Costs may be added to the property tax roll
- Additional enforcement actions may apply
The Township’s goal is always voluntary compliance and cooperation.
