Great news for Manitouwadge. After Fire Chief Scott Trach reached out to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) for approval of fuel‑reduction work identified in our FireSmart Plan—and funded through the Township’s 2025 FireSmart Grant—the Ministry was eager to meet on site, expressing how thrilled they were to see this initiative moving forward. Manitouwadge is officially the first community in Ontario to begin implementing these FireSmart vegetation‑management activities, marking an exciting milestone for our region.
MNRF Wildland Fire staff—Shayne McCool, Wildland Fire Management Advisor (Sudbury); Greg Kirkland, Fire Management Supervisor (Wawa); and John Knack, Fire Management Technician (Wawa)—joined Chief Trach to walk the selected areas. These locations will undergo small‑scale vegetation work such as pruning, trimming, chipping, and removing storm‑damaged trees.
This proactive effort not only strengthens our wildfire resilience but also showcases Manitouwadge as a leader in community wildfire safety across Ontario.
