Residents of Manitouwadge,
As summer approaches, it has become customary to place large garbage bins around our community, affectionately known as “Bear Bins”.
There is a mixed reaction to this annual placement as some argue that it allows for organic wastes to be placed in the bins and away from the homes which can reduce bear sightings on properties. The other school of thought is that by concentrating the smells associated with these large bins, it actually brings bears into the community.
In either case, with the introduction of recycling, the amount of household waste has already been reduced substantially and at this time, Public Works will not be placing the bins out as in years past. We will continue to monitor the situation to see if things change.
To ease this transition, Public Works will be providing a free of charge organic materials drop off to all residents. This service should be more than sufficient to meet any increased organics waste you may experience this summer. Every Thursday starting on Thursday June 30, 2022 and running until Thursday September 15, 2022, you can bring (1) one household bag of organic material only to the Public Works yard located at 11 Sault Road from 9:00 am-11:00 am and from 1:00 pm-2:30 pm to be placed in our garbage truck.
The Township thanks you for your cooperation in this matter as we try to better manage our waste generation.
