The Township of Manitouwadge is a progressive municipality with approximately 2000 residents.  It is located in the Thunder Bay District nestled off of Trans Canada Highway at the north end of Highway 614 and is situated 331 kilometers east of Thunder Bay and 378 kilometers north-west of Sault Ste. Marie Ontario.

 We are currently seeking a permanent full time Unionized Equipment Operator in our Public Works Department. Reporting directly to the Public Works Roads Supervisor, this is a permanent full-time unionized position consisting of 40 hours per week with the potential for overtime, especially during winter months.

The successful candidate will operate a variety of equipment to maintain and construct Township roads, bridges and ditches, and to maintain water systems, municipal facilities, cemeteries, properties and parks while following all safety procedures, legislation and Township Policies and Procedures.

 

Candidates who demonstrate skills and knowledge in the following areas will be considered:

  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment including but not limited to: dump trucks, garbage trucks, loaders, backhoes, snow plows, grader, etc.;
  • Road construction and maintenance activities/standards and safety procedures;
  • Ability to operate chainsaws and other small power and hand tools;
  • Knowledge of proper mechanical/vehicle maintenance;
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, drawings and maps; and
  • Good conflict resolution and customer service skills.

Required Certifications and or Health and Safety Requirements:

  • Ontario Class “D” or “A” Driver’s License and “Z” endorsement in good standing and provide a clear driver’s abstract for the past three years;
  • Three years of related equipment operator experience, preferably in a municipal environment;
  • Strong working knowledge of municipal road maintenance;
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification is strongly preferred;
  • Successful completion of OSSD with preference given to individuals with courses in T.J. Mahoney Road School (maintenance and construction);
  • Traffic control (Book 7), chain saw and/or chipper certification, heavy equipment certification would be an asset;
  • Confined space entry, common core municipal pit/quarry workers and surface miners certification would all be considered assets.

 The Township offers a competitive benefits package with a starting wage of $29.32 per hour based on the 2021 Collective Agreement wage schedule.
