Your Role:

Environmental Technician and WWTP Operator II

Perform all regularly scheduled monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual sampling and inspection requirements and any other extra sampling/inspection/maintenance requirements as needed.

Responsible for operating and maintaining a highly automated waste water treatment plant that includes chemical handling, workplace inspections/corrective actions and also responsible for supporting an environmental compliance and monitoring program that includes sample collection/submission, dam safety inspections, maintaining WHMIS inspections and records, maintaining inspection/records for fire extinguishers and AED devices, accurate data input/reporting and records-keeping, field instrument calibrations, hard copy file scanning and management, with all of the above in general adherence to all applicable laws including environmental and occupational health and safety regulatory requirements and all site specific legal instruments.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Completes tasks with minimal supervision, under the guidance of the Legacy Site Manager, employing logical problem solving skills, knowledge of treatment plant operations and maintenance, environmental/health/safety procedures, techniques and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations and company Health and Safety/Loss Prevention, Environmental and Social Responsibility policies and procedures.
  • Optimizes waste water treatment plant operations by maintaining/cleaning equipment, and performing daily operational checks, bench meter sample analyses, pH calibrations, inspections, process adjustments, preventive maintenance, scheduling, parts/chemical inventory re-order requests and record keeping.
  • Operates light duty vehicles, forklifts, loader/backhoe, snowmobile and all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) as needed to facilitate operational requirements including but not limited to sampling, snow clearing, chemical shipment unloading, weekly reagent transfers and off-loading of general deliveries.
  • Provides input to the development of Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) and appropriate manuals that support site operational requirements incorporating regulatory conditions as needed.
  • Completes and logs all monitoring and inspection requirements (including unscheduled events such as spills and incidents) taking into account all Federal, Provincial and company requirements to achieve full compliance.
  • Completes the maintenance, testing, calibration and record keeping for waste water treatment plant instrumentation, field meters/devices used for environmental and personal monitoring and identifies safety monitors/equipment that need to be sent out for certification as required.
  • Sustains and updates the Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) to ensure that Material Safety Data Sheets in all Hazard Awareness Centers are current along with performing area inspections for conformance to WHMIS requirements including the maintenance of training records.
  • Maintains the on-site library/archived documents that includes scanning and backup of critical documents such as permits, approvals, licenses, hazardous waste/transport documents, and regulatory reports and correspondence.
  • Participates in Emergency Response simulation/training annually to ensure compliance with regulatory and company requirements (CEPA-E2, FA-MMER, EPA-X, NMC-RR).
  • Organizes and maintains various seasonal environmental field equipment such as boats and safety kits, motors, snowmobiles, all-terrain-vehicles, tools, bear kits, snow shoes, and various other field safety equipment.
  • Operates and maintains standard business software (MS Office and Adobe Acrobat).
  • Coordinates with contract laboratories to ensure adequate and appropriate supplies of compliance sampling equipment and analysis is available as needed to meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Prepares, collects and ships environmental samples with appropriate/updated chain of custody documentation and sampling records for analysis of waste, air, soil, and water in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Maintains electronic records for all environmental sampling events, groundwater well sampling events, pond levels, pump operating hours, flow totalizer readings and tailings dam inspection events.
  • Inspects waste water treatment plant, tailings management area, aggregate pits and other worksites for EHS and regulatory compliance using inspection checklists and maintains a corrective actions register to enhance human health, environmental protection and regulatory compliance.
  • Completes the tailings dam daily/quarterly inspections and scans all records for electronic filing
  • Completes weekly activity reports along with daily tailgate safety meeting/records and conducts/records Activity Hazard Analysis for the various tasks at the site.
  • Plays key role in developing/updating job lists for continual improvements and helps to identify those aspects for job lists and site projects that require regulatory approval.

Training and Experience:

  • Completion of a technical or technological diploma or degree, in Environmental or related sciences, plus 5 years of relevant field experience, preferably related to the mining industry, would be an asset.
  • Requires good organizational skills with exceptional communication skills in oral, written and presentation mediums and can work to resolve issues independently or in a team setting with self-initiative to continually identify and improve on systems and procedures.
  • Competency, through knowledge, training or experience, and familiarity with all environmental and occupational health and safety regulatory requirements within the Ontario and Canadian jurisdiction a core asset.
  • Experience in process control systems, programmable logic controllers, minor mechanical repair/replacement of process equipment, instrumentation, electrical and computer software and systems/networks maintenance a definite asset.
  • Training certificates for Emergency First Aid, Confined Space Entry, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Workplace Hazardous Information System, OHS Awareness Training, Pleasure Craft Operator Card, Forklift Operation and Propane Cylinder Exchange Training, Fall Arrest, Chainsaw Operation Training, Snowmobile and ATV Operation considered as key components for the position.

 

Working Conditions

Work is performed at the closed/decommissioned gold mine site mostly within the waste water treatment plant building but includes exposure to harsh winter/summer extremes and wildlife (including bears, moose, wolves, coyotes, lynx) for outside duties around the Interlake Tailings Facility and in the field for water sampling.

  • Driving to/from work and sampling locations using company vehicles under all weather conditions is a necessity.
  • Inspection and operation of company equipment requires mounting and dismounting, wearing personal protective equipment (including full face respirators for chemical handling), pushing and pulling levers and knobs and turning steering wheels and handle bars.
  • Must be able to fly as a passenger in helicopters or fixed wing aircraft to remote sampling locations or for off-site training courses.
  • Confined space entry and fall arrest equipment use is a requirement.
  • Requires lifting, and sorting of materials, equipment and boxes and small pump repair.
  • Requires operation and interaction with general office computers and process control computers connected to Programmable Logic Controllers used at the waste water treatment plant and throughout the Interlake Tailings Facility.
  • Hearing and vision sufficient to distinguish various pitches/colours of warning alarms.
  • Walking on rough, uneven, inclined or wet terrain for outdoor sampling/inspections and climbing stairs/ladders to access reagent totes/metering pumps and top of process tanks.
  • Wearing of personal protective equipment including hard hat, steel toe shoes, safety glasses, face shields, fall arrest harnesses and lanyards, respirators, earplugs or earmuffs, gloves or any other equipment to perform duties safely.

Incumbent may be exposed to environmental hazards while transferring or unloading chemicals at the waste water treatment plant or when completing repairs and maintenance on process piping or pumps and while investigating spills and collecting samples.

 

This is a part time job that ranges between 1040 to 1560 hours per year.
